Officer Compensation Policies

The ACR is reviewing its policy on officer compensation. Currently our practice is to multiply an officer's average salary by the percent of time an officer dedicates to ACR business.

ACR President: 35% of time X average salary

Foundation President: 29% of time X average salary

Other Officers: 16% of time X average salary

How does your association address officer stipends? Is there a formula you use? Do you have a scheduled time to readdress the stipend policy?

Physicians' Foundation Releases New Report

A report commissioned by The Physicians Foundation raises new questions about the role of socioeconomic determinants as they relate to access, quality, and cost of medical care in the United States. The report, prepared by a team of noted physicians and economists headed by Richard “Buz” Cooper, MD, Professor of Medicine and Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, University of Pennsylvania, was sent to the President and Congress today in order to contribute to the national health care debate.

The report, entitled “Physicians and their Practices under Health Care Reform,” highlights several important concerns that the report’s authors believe have been left out of the health care discussion, including: the growing problem of physician shortages, the changes in physicians’ practices that will be necessary in a reformed health care system, and the pervasive effects of poverty and other social determinants which impact variation in access, quality and cost of care.

AMA Delegates and Financial Assistance

I am looking for any input regarding how different states support their AMA delegates at the interim and annual meetings. Specifically, does your state provide any financial assistance for air fare, hotel, etc?

I am not looking for any dollar amounts, only the manner in which support is provided. Any assistance will be appreciated!

Operations Procedures for Office with High Turnover

Our staff is small and we have a fairly high rate of turnover. Having a detailed description of our processes is necessary to making sure all the balls stay up in the air when a staff member leaves. We are beginning to put together an operations manual that lists the procedures for our major duties.

Does anyone have experience with this situation? How detailed are your procedural handbooks?

Note: this manual is also acting as a sort of job description for the staff (4 people,) since we currently do not have job descriptions for any staff member.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Our board has decided we need a physician (member) to represent our Academy in Washington DC in coalition meetings, hearings, etc. where our collective voice and insights would be beneficial -- particularly in 2009 with healthcare reform heating up again. They have put aside some money to support an honorarium and travel for one person. Does anyone have or has anyone seen a similar position in other medical societies? I need to develop a position description for this individual and it would be helpful to see samples (if anything like this exists).
