2011-2012 AAMSE Board - Additional Info

Jay Millson

President

Jay W. Millson Term Ending 2012
Executive Vice President
Duval County Medical Society

How many years have you been in medical society management?
18 years

How many years have you been a member of AAMSE? A member of the AAMSE Board of Directors?
14 years a member of AAMSE, four years on the Board of Directors

Why are you a member of AAMSE?
The resources and network of professionals afforded to you as an AAMSE member is more than worth the dues for being a member. The return on investment is significant, particularly when it comes to addressing issues others most likely have already tackled.

How do you find AAMSE valuable to medical society management and the profession? Why should a medical society executive join?
It seems only natural that those who lead medical associations or membership organizations should volunteer and support their own professional association. It gives you an appreciation for what your own volunteer leadership is encountering when working for you on issues (i.e., gives you patience when dealing with slow to respond leaders). Furthermore, networking within the profession opens doors both professionally and personally.

What year did you begin working in medical society management?
1995

What year did you become a member of AAMSE? A member of the AAMSE Board of Directors?
I became an AAMSE member in 1996 and a member of the Board in 2008.

Why are you a member of AAMSE?
Quite simply, AAMSE is my professional organization.

How do you find AAMSE valuable to medical society management and the profession? Why should a medical society executive join?
AAMSE is the home where I can relate to other professionals that do the same work that I do, and have similar struggles and challenges that I face. AAMSE gives me the opportunity to meet people from all across the country—county, state, state specialty, and national medical socieities—and share experiences with them. AAMSE members are so willing to share their experiences and expertise, and they don't mind if I steal an idea, a form, or a process that has worked for them—it keeps me from reinventing the wheel. These friendships and personal bonds make AAMSE unique, because we are all dealing with physician members and the healthcare environment.

About 17 years

How many years have you been a member of AAMSE? A member of the AAMSE Board of Directors?
Almost 15 for AAMSE and just over a year on the Board of Directors

Why are you a member of AAMSE?
Working at a membership organization makes you realize the importance of the work associations do, so being a member of the organization that supports medical association staff was a simple decision.

How do you find AAMSE valuable to medical society management and the profession? Why should a medical society executive join?
To me personally, AAMSE is an asset to doing my job of serving as a liaison with the state, county and national specialty societies for the AMA. The resources and the contacts that AAMSE provides are helpful in continuing to grow relationships that help in my day to day activities. AAMSE serves as way for medical society professionals to come together and share knowledge and learn from each others similar experiences.

How many years have you been in medical society management?
16 years

How many years have you been a member of AAMSE? A member of the AAMSE Board of Directors?
Almost 9 years as a member of AAMSE and I am a new member of the AAMSE Board of Directors

Why are you a member of AAMSE?
I am a member of AAMSE because I believe it is important to engage colleagues in similar fields of professional practice and participate actively in the advancement of my own career and those of my peers. AAMSE provides its members with opportunities to interact in both professional and social activities and provides educational information for professional growth and advancement. What year did you begin working in medical society management?
1987

What year did you become a member of AAMSE? A member of the AAMSE Board of Directors?
I've been in AAMSE since 1990 and on the board since 2011.

Why are you a member of AAMSE and how do you find AAMSE valuable to medical society management and the profession? Why should a medical society executive join?
I am a member and find value in the opportunity to network and learn from peers and mentors. A medical society executive should join for the opportunity to belong to a group that is only medical society staff and executives. While other organizations may have "sections" that would be relevant, AAMSE is the only organization specific to medical society staff.

What year did you begin working in medical society management?
2005

What year did you become a member of AAMSE? A member of the AAMSE Board of Directors?
I've been in AAMSE since 2006 and I'm a newbie on the Board this year.

Why are you a member of AAMSE?
Simply put- the people and education. I was fortunate to have the support and encouragement from my executive director to join AAMSE and become involved. I'm so lucky I did because I truly believe that AAMSE is my professional home. At any time, I can turn to my fellow AAMSE colleagues for guidance and suggestions on issues that I'm facing. Each time I attend an annual conference or educational event, I learn something new and take it back to the office with me. In addition, the staff that support AAMSE's efforts is top-notch.

How do you find AAMSE valuable to medical society management and the profession? Why should a medical society executive join?
Association management on its own is complicated and unique in nature and in today's environment medical society management is evolving rapidly. Members of AAMSE truly relate to the challenges I am facing and I learn techniques from other executives that I cannot learn anywhere else. I believe that being actively engaged enhances any experience and would encourage new members to do so. You'll find that AAMSE stays ahead of the curve and challenges you to consider new ways of addressing traditional roadblocks. The friendships that I've developed are invaluable and each experience that I have with AAMSE is a building block towards my professional growth.

How many years have you been a member of AAMSE? A member of the AAMSE Board of Directors?
One of the first tasks I completed as a newly hired staff member at KMS was my AAMSE application. I’m honored to be serving in my first year on the AAMSE Board of Directors.

Why are you a member of AAMSE? How do you find AAMSE valuable to medical society management and the profession? Why should a medical society executive join?
AAMSE is the only organization in the country which serves, exclusively, those who staff medical societies. Having access to the resources, information and network which AAMSE membership provides helps ensure my opportunity to be successful in better serving my membership.

How many years have you been in medical society management?
15 years

How many years have you been a member of AAMSE? A member of the AAMSE Board of Directors?
11 years as a member; newly elected member of Board (July 2010)

Why are you a member of AAMSE?
AAMSE is an important aspect of my professional development. AAMSE is the one organization where I can connect with peers and gain ideas and solutions to problems I face in my association. I also benefit from the educational resources.

How do you find AAMSE valuable to medical society management and the profession? Why should a medical society executive join?
Medical society management is a unique slice of association management. Our staff roles are very different than association professionals working with other entities like lawyers, teachers or artists. All members of AAMSE work with physicians and understand the unique issues and problems our society members face. This shared understanding enables us to participate in educational programs and discussions that make us better at our jobs and more valuable to our members. I belong to other professional associations but value my relationship with AAMSE more than the others.
