Benchmarking Project

In 2004, AAMSE began a multi-phase project to create a database containing data points on the full spectrum of medical and surgical associations. This benchmarking project aligns with its key strategic objective to be the information resource for medical society executives and their staffs. The database contains data on the various association types (specialty, state and county associations); it is unique in its composition and in the flexibility for parsing the data because of a variety of key association data variables.

The major themes covered by the database include the following:

  1. Governance and organization structures;
  2. Association financial data; and
  3. Programmatic and member benefit activities and programs.

The Benchmarking Project Documents include the following information:

  1. Information articles that provide a comprehensive analysis of the database as a result of a series of surveys undertaken by AAMSE;
  2. Charts detailing the results of the surveys;
  3. Identification of potential prevailing practices of medical/surgical associations;
  4. Commonly used ratio measures when reporting to association leadership;
  5. Articles that describe how to make use of this database to create association benchmarks to measure and compare a specific association to its strategic initiatives and to similar medical/surgical associations;
  6. Articles on how to make utilization of benchmarking an integrated management activity through the use benchmarking information presentation known as “dashboards;” and
  7. Presentation of the AAMSE Benchmarking Project at the 2007 AAMSE Annual Conference.
