The AAMSE Leadership Academy is a unique and intensive immersion
over a three-day period in case studies, strategies, tools and techniques that are proven to uncover and develop the leader within. You will learn to assess and enhance your individual leadership style and talents, and you’ll become part of a growing group of Leadership Academy graduates whose network for sharing ideas, expertise and best practices will benefit you for a lifetime.
The 2010 Leadership Academy begins with a personal assessment of your individual leadership practices. Prior to the Academy, each attendee must complete an online Leadership Practice Inventory (LPI). Meeting this deadline is critical to maximizing the value of the Leadership Academy experience and ensures that your results will be available on the first day of the Academy.
The LPI is a 360-degree assessment instrument that serves two purposes: it introduces the Five Practices model developed by Kouzes and Posner, and it provides a life-long tool that helps you assess the extent to which you actually implement those practices so that you can further develop and improve your personal leadership skills.
The LPI comprises 30 behavioral statements -- six for each of the five practices – and takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete. You will complete the LPI-Self, rating yourself on the frequency with which you think you engage in each of the 30 behaviors. You will also identify from five to 10 other people whom you will ask to complete the LPI-Observer questionnaire, rating you on the frequency with which they think you engage in each behavior. Respondents can indicate their relationship to you – supervisor, manager, co-worker, peer, direct report, or other observer -- but all the observers' feedback is anonymous.
The Five Practices:
-
Model the Way
-
Inspire a Shared Vision
-
Challenge the Process
-
Enable Others to Act
-
Encourage the Heart
You will receive your personal LPI results on the first day of the Leadership Academy.
To read more about the LPI, click here.
Then the real work begins. Building on the results of the LPI, attendees will explore the five practices common to personal best leadership through a series of unique and interactive exercises, discussions, videos and presentations.
Working with fellow attendees, you will seek solutions to challenging problems through team-building tasks, exchange ideas, share experiences and develop relationships with individuals who are striving toward common goals – and who will become colleagues and resources for years to come.

What do others have to say about the Leadership Academy?
“The AAMSE Leadership Academy was particularly helpful in my role as an association CEO, but also very enjoyable --"fun" is actually a better descriptor. I highly recommend it. AAMSE's focus on team building and organizational effectiveness as an integral part of individual leadership skill-building was an excellent strategy...It's a terrific and incredibly affordable venue.
Jack Lewin, MD, Chief Executive Officer, American College of Cardiology
"My experience was profound. We had a dynamic group and we clicked as we shared leadership secrets. I think that happens in each session, and that is one of the major values of the Academy."
Arthur E. Auer, Executive Director, Collin-Fannin County Medical Society
“The Leadership Academy is perfect training for medical society executives who want to improve leadership skills... the content is invaluable!”
Richard Skinner, Associate Director, Member Services, North Carolina Medical Society
