With the health care reform bill signed into law, it is now time to stop discussing what-ifs and look at what is actually happening. This session will look at the megatrends of health care, including:

    • The status of health reform issues of importance to practices (like IPAB, absence of tort reform, payment reform and ACOs, Medicaid payment issues, etc)
    • Payment reform implications and issues that will emerge in the next year (especially as the SGR has stalled)
    • The physician employment trend---and specifically the impacts of hospitals employing physicians, including implications of hospitals managing “accountable care organizations.
9:30 - 10:45 AM

Open Mike on Making Membership Appealing to the Next Generation of Members
Moderator
Dale Singer, MHA, Renal Physicians Association

What do traditionalists and baby boomers need to understand about Gen Xers and Millenials to ensure the future of our specialty societies? The composition of our constituents is changing and their attitudes toward work and volunteerism along with their expectations for services and programs are different from physicians at the end of their careers. In order for our associations to remain relevant medical society executives need know what drives these younger physicians and how we can best help them achieve success. Review data from medical society surveys of these younger members and bring your ideas for engaging them in the world of professional associations.

Developing Innovative Revenue Sources
Facilitators

Donald C. Jones, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists
Philip A. Saigh, Jr., American Academy of Pain Medicine
Dale Singer, MHA, Renal Physicians Association

One of the major challenges that medical associations face in today’s economic and political environment is the need to identify and develop sustainable sources of non-dues revenue. This challenge is elevated by the diminishing support from industry due to multiple factors.

Join your AAMSE Specialty CEO colleagues as they discuss innovations for medical associations’ revenue streams. Discussion topics will include identifying those aspects of generating revenue that are common to most medical associations as well as those that are distinct to specific medical associations.

2 - 3:00 PM

CEO Contracts and Retention
Presenter
Paula Goedert, JD, Barnes & Thornberg LLC

Moderator
Chris Mahaffey, MS, CAE, American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons

Association Trends recently reported that when associations renege on severance pay, the former executive usually receives only 50% of what the contract stipulated. Surprised? CEO contracts and related procedures continue to evolve as organizational transparency, conflicts of interest, and tax codes change. Attorney Paula Goedert represents dozens of medical associations and has represented both sides – the association (board) and the employee. She’ll discuss the most recent trends in contract language and litigation, with plenty of time for blind questions.
